Nora Blansett
I live in Atlantic Canada, have two beautiful children (Brianna and Conner), and we still believe in faeries. I’ve been working as an artist for about sixteen years, and my primary focus has always been faeries, mermaids and intricate design. My designs were strongly influenced by my years overseas in the Middle East, and of course my refusal to grow up keeps the magic of faeries alive.
My favourite mediums are pen and ink, watercolours and watercolour pencils. I love the control I have with the watercolour pencils as well as their versatility. With the pen and ink, the stippling shading takes hours of repetitive dots, but the end result to me is worth the effort. After I finish the piece in ink, I enjoy playing with colour.
Aside from my work in standard mediums and the art sculpture dolls, I also do some wood burning (pyrography). It’s a little more difficult to get a proper picture of. I work on standard wood boards, but I also decorate boxes and anything else I can burn a design into. I’ve been strongly considering doing some staffs, wands and canes… Yet another thing to keep a watch for! Any work I’ve completed using wood burning will be a once in a lifetime grab!
The soft sculpture art faerie dolls are relatively new. I’ve found that those who have seen them locally have had quite a bit of interest. I’ve really found a lot of inspiration for my dolls from such artists as Molly Harrison and Brian Froud. The dolls have recently been picked up by a shop located in Windsor, and I’m really excited about the possibilities.
My work has been used to both adorn a wall, as well as the body canvas. I’ve been designing tattoo flash now sixteen years or more, and in my “earlier years” I worked as a tattoo artist. I haven’t worked in the tattoo business in years, but over the years I’ve still sold flash to countless studios and will probably continue to do so as long as there is an interest in body decoration.
I couldn’t even begin to list the many things that inspire my work as a whole. I’ve been moved to create by everything from my daughter the faerie, my son the sweetest imp, to toadstool rings. We still leave sweets by our favourite trees for the faeries (they adore cake icing!), toss a shiny coin over the side of bridges to keep the trolls out of our hair (pennies are a favourite!), and I’m as superstitious as they come. I believe in magick, practise it frequently, and live life with as much joy as I can find. I still look for hidden castles in dark woods, and someday I’ll be the village wise woman.
I do show my work locally, as well as throughout the province in fantastic galleries such as Old Mader’s Wharf Emporium in Mahone Bay and shops such as Daniel’s Gifts in Windsor. I hope to be showing more throughout Atlantic Canada and the Northeastern States. I have shown throughout the Southern US, my home before moving to the beautiful Great White North. I still currently have work available at the New South Gallery in Montgomery, Alabama.
I hope you enjoy the art you see here, I’ve put a lot of myself into every piece. Each one has significant meaning beyond the obvious. Check back often to see what’s new and always feel free to ask questions not covered in the FAQs. I check my messages daily and make a point to try to respond to every email in a timely manner. Now sit down with a cup of tea and take your time, there’s some stories to read beyond the penlines.
Nora has been an artist at Badges of Honour since mid 2007!
